Field Trip to the National Entrepreneur Center

Mary Ann Hodel, Library Director, staff members and the Contract Designers for the DLM-TIC went on a field trip this week to the National Entrepreneur Center located in Orlando’s Fashion Square Mall.  One goal is to begin partnerships that will benefit local entrepreneurs and small businesses so they become more aware of the vision for DLM-TIC.  We are looking into green screen technology suitable for shooting YouTube commercials, audio software that can be used for radio or Internet podcasting and design software with capabilities for logos, business cards and business advertising.

Calling all entrepreneurs and small business owners in Orange County, FL, check in with us and watch DLM-TIC grow! There may be something in it for you!

Sketching with Arduino

Arduino electronic boards and open source software are designed for use by anyone who has little or no electronic or engineering experience.  They are becoming popular in educational programs and with artists and designers, who would like to make things that can respond to touch, sound, light and/or movement.  The Arduino community is active and vibrant through the Arduino forum and the Arduino Wiki.

So . . . begin sketching with Arduino by checking out this video from Make Magazine.

Brainstorming with the Designers

Last week, we met with the Designers to brainstorm concepts and layouts for the entire space.  Ideas and suggestions from the staff focus groups were shared with the Designers.  It was very exciting to envision the center taking shape and to know that we are one step closer to the opening of the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation and Creativity!

Can a robot teach new skills?

The DLM-TIC will provide an environment that is fun and invigorating.  However, learning and skill development will also play an important role. Constructing robots has contributed to building many of the skills needed in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.  Lego has the right idea!  So what other technologies have you explored that can contribute to a stimulating fun learning environment?
