A Trip to Full Sail University

Last week, staff went on a field trip to the Full Sail University campus in Winter Park in order to spark some innovative ideas for DLM-TIC. They met with one of Full Sail’s Industry Outreach Representatives and toured many of the film and recording studios, as well as the Hollywood-style film backlot that is utilized for both student and professional projects. They saw the Full Sail University Sports Lab powered by ESPN, and the on-campus studio that is home to the nationally syndicated morning show, The Daily Buzz. The tour included several student spaces and classroom areas where they viewed impressive student work in film, audio, 3D modeling and graphic design. Take a look at some of the highlights of their visit and keep watching our blog for further news about the DLM-TIC.

A Test Flight . . . Close to the Real Thing

The use of simulation in education is becoming widely recognized. In schools, simulators are used to supplement teaching and in the medical and aeronautical fields, simulators are used for training in realistic simulated environments.  The crew at OCLS went on a tour to explore the world of simulation and took a test flight in the cockpit of an aircraft carrier from a remote island. With the sound and realistic visual effects, it was close to the real thing. So what type of simulator have you experienced …or would like to experience in the DLM-TIC?

Plans for the DLM-TIC Continue to Move Forward

Working with our consultants, FX Design Group in partnership with Design Island, we’ve held meetings to discuss project goals and priorities. Out of those discussions, a preliminary floor plan has been developed. Also,  work on documentation to  serve as the basis for securing architectural and engineering services is underway.

New to the DLM-TIC concept is the addition of a “Simulation” area. Comprised of a classroom area and a Simulator experience area, we will create an immersive, game based experience. The experience begins with learning to use mathematics principles to plan and plot flight plans and ends by putting those principle to use by executing that flight plan in a simulator.

To help determine which services may generate the greatest interest and adoption in the community, we developed a survey for our users. Nearly 900 individuals shared feedback with us taking surveys online and in paper format in house. Results of those surveys are included here.   The good news is that on average, half of respondents believed that they were at least somewhat likely to use the services of the DLM-TIC! If you didn’t get a chance to take the survey go ahead and share your opinion now!

Field Trip to the National Entrepreneur Center

Mary Ann Hodel, Library Director, staff members and the Contract Designers for the DLM-TIC went on a field trip this week to the National Entrepreneur Center located in Orlando’s Fashion Square Mall.  One goal is to begin partnerships that will benefit local entrepreneurs and small businesses so they become more aware of the vision for DLM-TIC.  We are looking into green screen technology suitable for shooting YouTube commercials, audio software that can be used for radio or Internet podcasting and design software with capabilities for logos, business cards and business advertising.

Calling all entrepreneurs and small business owners in Orange County, FL, check in with us and watch DLM-TIC grow! There may be something in it for you!
