Melrose in the Mix Gaining Momentum

After premiering the series in April 2017 and offering five sessions throughout the year, our Melrose in the Mix live recording sessions have continued in 2018 with a number of noteworthy shows. The series, which features locally renowned artists recording live before intimate audiences in the Melrose Center Audio Studio, also provides Melrose Center members with Audio Studio credentials the chance to assist staff engineers with session production. Thus far in 2018, local MCs Sean Shakespeare (April), EyeQ (June) and E-Turn (July) have each turned in electrifying performances. The most recent show on August 5 featured Orlando Americana legend Terri Binion, accompanied by bassist Tony Macaluso and guitarist Greyson Charnok, and received coverage in Bao Le-Huu’s This Little Underground column in Orlando Weekly.  Upcoming Melrose in the Mix sessions include singer songwriters Moody Sunshine (September 8) and Ka Malinalli (October 7.)

Melrose Center: On the Road

As 2016 comes to an end, we’re already looking forward to some awesome events in January 2017. If you don’t believe us, check out our events page!

One such event will bring our team on a (short) ride from our Downtown Orlando location to the Orlando Science Center. Otronicon will be held January 13 – 16, and our staff will be there to demo some technology that we’re working to make available to for our Melrose members (and some that’s already accessible)! You’ll be able to participate in this virtual ring-side game event in one of four ways (or do them all). We’re calling it The Melrose Immersive Experience. We hope you’ll come find our booth!

Introducing the Melrose Creative Expo!

Did we mention that the voting period for the third annual Melrose Awards is underway? If you haven’t already, you should check out all the submissions that were sent in by some majorly talented people, and VOTE! Go ahead, clicky…we’ll wait right here. [Edit: The voting period is closed…Plan on coming to the Expo to see who won!!]

Wasn’t that so much fun? If you’re not careful, you’ll get some of those songs stuck in your head, amirite?? Okay, so that aside, the winners will be announced at our newly named Melrose Creative Expo! I know, you’re shrugging and wondering, “Why is it a big deal to stray from the short-lived tradition of calling it an Anniversary?” Well, that’s because we wanted these celebrations to be less about the mere passage of time and more about the creativity, community and innovation that has grown in and around the Melrose Center. Our Studio and Lab doors will be open with hands-on demonstrations inside. A number of scheduled live performances will keep us all entertained (I can’t promise that this won’t turn into a dance party) while you connect with exhibitors throughout the Melrose Center.

We plan on celebrating big and we want you to join us! Save the date: Saturday, February 11, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Melrose’s Hope to Encourage Entrepreneurs

The Orlando Sentinel’s Tech Check featured an interview with Mr. Melrose regarding his thoughts on entrepreneurship and what the Melrose Center’s role could be for someone with dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.

Melrose has poured $1.5 million into the Orange County Public Library, establishing a tech center to encourage others to pursue their entrepreneurial ideas.

“It’s a catalyst for people to think beyond documents or think beyond what they thought a library was before,” Melrose, 75, told the Orlando Sentinel. “It spurs the idea of entrepreneurship and makes people more comfortable saying, ‘I’d like to form my own company and do something I’ve never thought of before.’”

The article was published in anticipation of the Melrose Center’s 2nd Anniversary, which takes place Saturday, February 6, starting at 11:00 AM.
