Melrose in the Mix Gaining Momentum

After premiering the series in April 2017 and offering five sessions throughout the year, our Melrose in the Mix live recording sessions have continued in 2018 with a number of noteworthy shows. The series, which features locally renowned artists recording live before intimate audiences in the Melrose Center Audio Studio, also provides Melrose Center members with Audio Studio credentials the chance to assist staff engineers with session production. Thus far in 2018, local MCs Sean Shakespeare (April), EyeQ (June) and E-Turn (July) have each turned in electrifying performances. The most recent show on August 5 featured Orlando Americana legend Terri Binion, accompanied by bassist Tony Macaluso and guitarist Greyson Charnok, and received coverage in Bao Le-Huu’s This Little Underground column in Orlando Weekly.  Upcoming Melrose in the Mix sessions include singer songwriters Moody Sunshine (September 8) and Ka Malinalli (October 7.)

The Melrose Creative Expo is Back, February 17, 2018!

The Melrose Creative Expo provides the perfect opportunity to explore the Melrose Center as we celebrate our fourth anniversary on February 17.  Come join us for the Melrose Awards ceremony as we honor the best projects completed using Center resources during the past year.  Tag along for tours of the audio, video and photo studios, take a spin on one of our simulators, or try on a VR headset and step into another reality.  Enjoy live music from Beth McKee, E-Turn and Marc With a C, and visit with a number of community exhibitors including representatives from the Orlando Science Center, Apple Florida Mall, Tourist City Ghostbusters and many more.

Since opening in February 2014, the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for technology, Innovation and Creativity has allowed the Orange County Library System to expand its role as a provider of technology education. Occupying 26,000 square feet on the second floor of the Orlando Public Library, the Melrose Center allows users to gain the understanding required to be a contributor to and consumer of emerging technologies.  We offer state of the art audio, video and photo studios, fabrication and simulation labs, an interactive media wall, editing bays, sound booths, collaborative work spaces and the means to pursue virtual reality and video game development. Over 9,000 OCLS patrons have become Melrose Members by taking the Center’s general orientation. Last year, Melrose instructors taught nearly 4,500 classes, guiding patrons toward self-sufficiency with an array of equipment and software.  During that same period, Melrose Members reserved over 2,200 sessions in studios, editing bays and sound booths.

The Melrose Center is about fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and community engagement. It is a monthly meetup venue for numerous groups with interests including robotics, podcasts, web development and game design.  Additionally, staff have created monthly meetup groups pertaining audio and video production, photography and digital media design, with combined group membership over 3,700.  Our Family STEM Saturdays and Makerspace Open Lab introduce electronic engineering, 3-D printing and basic robotic concepts to enthusiasts of all ages.  Regularly scheduled events such as Open Mic: The Voice of Melrose, Script Orlando, and Melrose in the Mix: Live Recording Sessions further define the Center as a venue for emerging and established performers as well as inspirational and informative speakers from the community.

Come see for yourself all the amazing resources and activities the available at the Melrose Center, and help us kick off Year Five in style at the Melrose Creative Expo.
